THE ST MAG SUBSCRIPTION SAGA
BY DEREK HUNT AND JAMES L. MATHEWS
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
By now you probably ALL know about ST REVIEW being bought out by ST FORMAT
which in itself is a very, very, very sad happening but meanwhile there are
many people, the subscribers to one or both of these magazines, that have
been caught in a rip-off trap. Derek Hunt has been keeping POWER, both
through me and through the pages of this disk mag, informed about HIS
experiences with this problem over the last few months. Derek has now
written off to both EUROPRESS\I.D.G. MEDIA (producers of ST REVIEW) and
FUTURE PUBLISHING (producers of ST FORMAT) on the subject. Below are the
exact letters that have been sent off by Derek. As of yet no reply has been
received from either magazine but if a reply DOES emerge from either or both
magazines then we hope to be able to print them in POWER for you to see.
THE LETTER TO EUTOPRESS\I.D.G. MEDIA (ST REVIEW)...
Dear Sir,
I write in disgust at the way in which I,and possibly
others, have been treated by your Company over the last few months.
I refer of course to the demise of ST USER and ST REVIEW.
I accept,as do all of us ST'ers that one day our beloved
Format will die out.I accept that we cannot expect the World of
business to back us by producing magazines and produce that does
not bring them a reasonable return on their Capital.
What I do expect though is that they would have the common
decency to let their subscribers know that the end was night, not go
right up to and in the November and December issues still asking for
subscriptions.
Indeed I myself,when checking with my Bank,found I had
FOUR "live" Direct Debits for the magazines, AND I have not even
received the last editions.
Your Customer Service Dept informed me that unused parts
of my subscriptions would be passed over,as was the magazine,to
FUTURE PUBLISHING. Who told them that I wished to have that magazine
I do not know, I could have been asked. I like others subscribe
already to their magazines so what a right ***** up it will be with
unused USER and REVIEW subscriptions being passed over.Particularly
if someone had only just taken out a full years subscription.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY GO AS WELL?! Those who have paid
their subscriptions with Credit Card I believe can have a claim on
the Card Company, those who paid cash and Direct Debit will have to
wait and see.Why I say this is that I have already lost money this
past year through Clubs and magazines closing.By passing over the
subscriptions obviously the intentions are good but we could have
been asked first after all we were backing your magazines with our
money.
I have written in the same vein to ST FORMAT,with copies to
ST Disk mags and can only hope that at least they will all know how
some of us feel.
I should be exceedingly grateful if the issues after Decembers
of the REVIEW (i.e. Xmas and I believe a special) could be forwarded
onto me.
Yours faithfully
(Derek W W Hunt)
THE LETTER TO FUTURE PUBLISHING (ST FORMAT)...
Dear Sirs,
First may I wish you and all ST'ers a Prosperous New Year
with the hope that things can only get better for us in our FORMAT;
that's the ST itself and the magazine.
Now to the nitty gritty of my reason for writing.During
last year of 1994 both PDL's and some Magazines have taken the road
to oblivion. With them has gone part of the lifeline of the ST.Some
will be missed,in particular those that have at least tried to
benefit us ST'ers. The ones that won't be missed are those that have
only been in the game for what they can get out of it,those who
have "closed" down but remained in operation in another form or
carried on with other sides of their business.
Even some of the big names who have "gone??" have treated
customers disgustingly, particularly their subscribers who have at
least ensured them of a guaranteed income,in advance,by Direct
Debit.
I myself have been caught out 4 times during the year, losing
money in at least 2 cases and awaiting the results of the other
two.The latest incident was with a magazine that failed to arrive,
and when queried why it hadnt been sent I was informed that my new
subscription would not start until January 95.I had recently been
sent a new mandate to sign. When I told them that I still had a
Direct Debit "live" I was promised my outstanding magazine and a
"sort out of the problem".The same day I received not one but two
letters from the Company, both with different order numbers, thanking
me for my subscription payments.A check with my Bank as to what
Direct Debits I was paying showed that there were FOUR "live" Debit
Accounts for that Company. I still have not received my outstanding
magazines and I am now told by the parent company that they have
none left and have now passed the magazines and my subscription
over to ST FORMAT.
Of course NO ONE has a) asked me if I wanted that
or b) If I already subscribed to ST FORMAT.I do subscribe already
so a word with your Customer Relations Office put me in the picture
of what will happen to unused subscriptions from the other Mags, and
of course in some cases it will be from 2 Mags that the
subsriptions will need to be carried over. This brings the next
point to mind and of course in your case it could be a much larger
sum that is involved. With the other mags and PDL's that have gone
the sum involved has not been more than a quartely payment.Yours
is an Annual amount.
What guarantee do we have that our subscriptions
will be safe,if you go there doesn't seem to be anyone ready to
carry on and take over.
The thing that upsets me and I am sure others in
this matter has been the way in which the magazines have gone about
their demise. They must have known for instance that when they sent
out my renewal letters that the company was packing in. Since Sept
they have been asking people to take out Direct Debit subscriptions
and even when I spoke to them on the 1st Dec about my non existent
Mag and my subscription "cockup" they did not even hint of what was
happening.
All the readers of past and present ST magazines are doing
their level best to keep our FORMAT alive by supporting ST
magazines, both printed and on disk,by supporting,as best as
possible PDL's,although the latter of course has very little chance
of increasing its stock greatly. BUT what do we get from the more
affluent for doing so? NOTHING, not even a last thankyou edition.
I,and I am sure others, will continue to support both you
and what we have left. BUT PLEASE,if you decide to call it a day
don't just sneak away like a "Flitter" overnight, face us and tell us
well in advance. If you and your readers (if you should decide to
print any of this) do not know what a "flitter" is I am sure that
your elder generation can tell you.
Many thanks for some of the outstanding and the
interesting articles which you have produced over the last year,my
first with your magazine.I shall incidently be sending a few copies
of this letter to various disk magazines.I shall also be writing to
the parent Company of the one magazine involved.
Yours faithfully
(Derek W W Hunt)
I would expect that if any replies DO come through then the replies will be
very "Oh, you have nothing to worry about" type of affair. FUTURE
PUBLISHING (ST FORMAT) are bound to say that they won't be abandoning the ST
for a good few years yet and if they do they will make sure they do it
'properly' and will probably also apologise for the subscription problem but
say that in the end they will be getting a much better magazine and will
benefit from this event. EUROPRESS\I.D.G. MEDIA (ST REVIEW) probably won't
reply as they have no reason to care anymore as they have closed down. If
they DO reply though then it will probably be a short apology telling Derek
to leave his problem in the hands of FUTURE PUBLISHING (ST FORMAT) saying
that it is THEIR problem now. We shall see.
